The ancient city of Cordoba, Spain is legendary for Moorish architecture such as the Mezquita Cathedral, the Alcazar and the Roman bridge. It has been a center of learning as the home of the philosopher Seneca and many notable flamenco artists. The Red Cross Hospital of Cordoba (Hospital Cruz Roja de Cordoba) is located in the heart of the city, beside the iconic Puerta de Almodovar, the gateway to the Jewish Quarter on the old city’s west side.

Built in 1933, this hospital today provides vital services to more than 310,000 citizens, including over 30 medical and surgical specialties with 137 beds, seven operating rooms, a delivery room, blood bank, emergency room, neonatal emergency room and a medical laboratory. During the course of a normal year, it handles a large volume of cases with approximately 36,000 emergency visits, 18,000 appointments, 110,000 patients and 5,600 surgeries.

Out with the old, in with the new

Specialized cranes and equipment were needed in order to carry the gensets through the building. It took an exceptional level of detailed planning and skillful execution to maneuver through narrow spaces.

While the project presented multiple technical challenges, the Cummins dealer leveraged their expertise to arrive at solutions. For instance, the project required hooking up the new unit to the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) while maintaining a specific voltage of 230v. This was managed through adaptations to the circuit breaker and command module.

In a project like this, planning is everything – and everything went as planned. The old unit was dismantled and removed and the Cummins C220D5E (powered by a QSB6.7-G5 engine) was successfully installed and tested to deliver the 180 KVA that the hospital requires. All within a 24-hour time span. Cummins Dealer, Marín Ayala, has the capability of not only providing the expertise of installing the equipment but also providing the required aftermarket support.

The collaboration between Cummins Power Generation, the local Cummins dealer and Cruz Roja was so successful that the project now serves as a model for future projects that could be generated in other provinces.
