The Ana Lucia ready to fish.

“We are a 100% Peruvian company with a fishing tradition and entrepreneurial spirit. Our knowledge, transmitted from one generation to the next, originates from the direct experience of people closely linked to the sea and has been consolidated by the professionalism and commitment of a team of experts which works in each one of the branches of the company.” So says the web page of the Peruvian anchovy fishing company Hayduk Corporation.

The company web page goes on to say, “The future presents itself to us as a world to conquer and we face it with major projects and placing ourselves in a leading position in tendencies and technology, always maintaining our essence as a company: as fishermen and Peruvians.”

An example of this commitment to maintaining a leading position in technology was demonstrated recently with the repower of one of their anchovy purse seiners with a modern Cummins KTA50 M2 main engine. The Ana Lucia is a 48.95 by 9.05-meter purse seiner with a 500-ton cargo capacity. As part of the company’s fleet of about 22 purse seiners, they also have six trawlers fishing hake, the Ana Lucia is an important contributor of anchovies both for direct human consumption and indirect human consumption by way of fish meal. This carefully regulated fishery is an important contributor to the Peruvian economy.

The repower of the Ana Lucia involved the removal of a Cat 3516 rated for 1600 HP at 1200 RPM and its replacement with the Cummins KTA50 M2 rated for continuous duty of 1600 HP at 1800 RPM. In order to keep the same four-blade 2166 m/m by 1748.94 propeller, that is optimized for the vessel, it was necessary to also change the gear from one with just under a 4:1 ratio to a Masson –ZF W7300 with a 6:1 ratio. This allowed for the significant increase in RPM with the new engine. With the new engine in place and general servicing, the Ana Lucia makes 12.5 knots running light and 11.5 knots with a full load.
