Cummins Vessel Reference #633

Outboard Profile

Tell City, Rockport, Owensboro, Yankeetown, Evansville and Henderson are harbors between Mile 731 and Mile 808 on the Ohio River. Operated by Evansville Marine Services (EMS-Harbors) they provide a wide range of services from barge preparation and crane services to dry dock and repair work. They also have a fleet of fifteen boats that does fleeting, shifting and local towing for clients.

To add power and capacity to this fleeting and line haul work EMS has a new 70 by 28-foot vessel under construction at Marine Builders in Utica, Indiana. Built to a design by Farrell and Norton the 2000-HP tug is, according to Tom Farrell, “a proven hull design with modifications to the deck house to suit the owner’s preferences.

These modifications include accommodation for a crew of six in four cabins with two shared heads. With a large galley and mess area on the main deck as well as laundry facilities and additional head this will be a comfortable boat for the crew. Below decks, a pair of Cummins’ mechanical EPA Tier II compliant K38-M main engines, each delivering 1000 HP at 1800 RPM, provide the muscle for both fleet work and line-haul as required. The engines will turn 74-inch four-blade stainless steel propellers through TwinDisc MG540 gears. Electrical needs will be met by a pair of Cummins 6BTA5.9-DM powered 72 kW generators.

Scheduled for an autumn delivery the new push boat will add significantly to the already extensive range of vessels and services provided along the Ohio River system by EMS.
