Cummins Vessel Reference #663

Built ABD Boat builders in North Vancouver. Delivered April 2012 Main engines 2 X Cummine KTA38 500/800 HP @ 1800 RPM, HRP Z-drives

From time to time I come on a tug that has been so well thought out by her designer and put together with meticulous care by her builder, that no amount of photos can tell the whole story. As with most such tugs, the Renegade will be operated, at least some of the time by her owner. Jack Davies brought years of seamanship and sea time to the designer A.J. Mcilwain. During construction he visited the builder several times per week. The result is a tug that is pleasing to the eye at a distance and equally impressive in detail.

Renegade

For an account of the tug during construction as well as a profile and GA please see Cummins Hotips#646 from October 2011. Davies took delivery of his new tug this past April and it is now on location with Davies’ other tug, the Numas Warrior, at Port McNeil on Northern Vancouver Island where it provides ship assist at a gravel quarry. Because this was such a great tug to photograph, I have included here a file of 20 low-resolution images with a caption for each one.

ABD’s co-owner Burton Drody is rightly proud of the immaculate engine room with its pair of Cummins KTA38-M diesels with variable rationgs of 500 hp at 1600 RPM and 800 hp at 1800 RPM. This allows the vessel to meet Canadian manning regulations that require an engineer only for the higher rating.
