Cummins Hotips #809

On the hard but ready for the water.

There was a time when the shipyards of Sarawak couldn’t keep up with the orders for OSVs, landing craft and tugs. Now, the shipyards are feeling the worldwide doldrums brought on by low oil prices.

Hung Seng Shipbuilding, is Sibu, Sarawak has experienced a similar slowing in orders, but to keep their crews of expert welders, pipe fitters and other trades occupied, they have built some tugs on speculation.

One that is sitting on the hard but ready for the water, is a 32 by 9.13-meter tug with a molded depth of 4.3 meters. Designed by Naval Arch Marine and classed NKK, it has accommodation for up to 12 crew in two one-person and five two-person cabins. Tankage is built in for approximately 224 cubic meters of fuel oil, 35 m3 of water, 8 m3 of ballast water and 6 m3 of grey water.

A practical and functional design.

A pair of Cummins KTA50-M2 diesels, each delivering 1600 HP at 1800 RPM, provides propulsion power. The engines turn into Reintjes WAF665L gears with 5.95:1 ratios. These turn fixed pitch propellers in nozzles. There are two 80 kW generators and one 50 kW hotel generator.

The bridge has a full set of navigation and communication electronics. On deck is a 40-ton hydraulic towing-winch and a 40 ton towing-hook. Options that can be added to meet customer’s requirements include a bow thruster, external ¼ fi-fi, internal CO2 fi-fi system and generator upgrade to 130 kW.
