The Future Vision for Cleaner Engine Technology

The Integrated System, a concept product designed to help customers address future CO2 and NOx challenges, represents one of the ways that Cummins is continuing to invest in the development of clean engine technology. The concept of an integrated turbocharger and aftertreatment system combines engineering expertise from Cummins Turbo Technologies and Cummins Emission Solutions to deliver new air and thermal management architectures in a single system. Cummins has a strong history of leading in diesel innovation and this integrated architecture is another example of that technology leadership. This technologically advanced concept product is critically important for our customers and the environment.

With the development of the Integrated System, which is still under development, Cummins is taking innovation to the next level. It demonstrates Cummins’ technology leadership to power our customer’s success and help them address future technology challenges in an ever-changing industry.

Cummins Phase II Integrated System Concept
Integrated Rotary Turbine Control Reduces thermal inertia, improves packaging and allows up to 100% turbine bypass, enabling aftertreatment systems to reach operating temperatures faster.
UL4 Doser Positioned closer to the turbo, which enables free mixing of the urea by using the swirl of gas coming from the turbine wheel.
Flex Coupling Compensator Optimizes the UL4 doser’s positioning, dampens vibrations and offers installation flexibility.
Close Coupled Unit The improved catalyst design is more compatible with the turbocharger flow range.
High Efficiency Holset® Turbocharger A next gen inverse impeller wheel, new oil sealing technology and a thermally optimized bearing system are some of the air-handling improvements that have been made to the turbine, compressor and rotor system to improve efficiency and robustness.

THE NEW PHASE II INTEGRATED SYSTEM CONCEPT

HOW IT WORKS

  • The integrated Rotary Turbine Control enables exhaust gases to bypass the turbine stage and enter the Close Coupled Unit after the gas has been injected with urea by the new Cummins UL4 injector.
  • When combined with the Single Module™ chassis mounted aftertreatment, the concept Integrated System has the potential to improve emissions, particularly for cold start and urban driving operations.

Combining Engineering Expertise to Help Customers Address Future Emissions Control Standards

The concept system has been designed to help customers address future CO2 and NOx challenges. The phase II design contains new air-handling and integrated aftertreatment architecture packaged in a single system, a first for the commercial diesel market.

RTC Valve

Optimized heat management: Up to 100% exhaust gas bypass, enabling the aftertreatment to reach operating temperatures faster and reduce NOx more efficiently.

Improved thermal management: Generates back pressure for thermal management, driving Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).

Turbo Technology

UL4 Doser

Improved temperature control: Increased ambient temperature capability and increased ambient temperature limit, up to 160c (200c limited time), is designed to enable post turbo urea injection.

Improved reliability: Together with the UL2.2, UL4 is one of the only liquid-only dosing systems on the market, offering freeze-robustness in its design. The system is designed specifically to prevent doser crystallization and clogging.

Dosing Technology

Flex Coupling Compensator

Improved packaging: The new Flex Coupling Compensator optimizes the UL4 doser's positioning, dampens vibrations and offers installation flexibility.

Aftertreatment Technology

Close Couple Unit CCU

Improved emissions integration: The close coupled aftertreatment unit benefits from higher exhaust gas temperatures to enable more effective emissions conversion. When combined with the Single Module™ chassis mounted aftertreatment, it has the potential to improve emissions, particularly for cold start and urban driving operations.
