Cummins Westport Celebrates 10 Years

By Cummins Inc., Global Power Technology Leader

At Cummins, we have a long history of successful joint ventures, and our association with Westport Innovations, which began in 1988, is no exception. Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI) was formalized as a joint venture business on March 7, 2001. Since that time, it has become a significant force in the transportation industry.

Over the past decade, Cummins Westport has grown to become the world’s leading supplier of natural gas engines to bus and truck OEMs, providing over 28,000 engines worldwide and powering vehicles on every continent except Antarctica.

Engine platforms have included the B Gas Plus, C Gas Plus, L Gas Plus and the current ISL G. Highly flexible in terms of fueling, Cummins Westport engines can run on compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) or renewable biomethane. In North America, there are over 7,000 Cummins Westport natural gas engines in transit buses, as well as over 1,000 shuttles and school buses.

In 2007, the Cummins Westport 8.9 liter ISL G, featuring unique Stoichiometric cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (SEGR) combustion, became the first heavy-duty production engine certified to meet stringent EPA 2010 emissions levels when it was introduced in 2007. The ISL G features improved performance and fuel economy, and meets 2010 emissions standards with three-way catalyst aftertreatment, which is maintenance-free.

The combination of rugged durability, exceptional reliability, a domestic fuel source and clean operation has proven to be a winning recipe, as the ISL G is now approaching 10,000 units built and sold. Over the past three years, it has been the natural-gas engine market-share leader in transit and shuttle buses, refuse vehicles, yard tractors and conventional trucks.

Today, as concerns about dependence on foreign petroleum products continue to be an issue, Cummins Westport is well positioned to take advantage of readily available natural gas throughout North America and the rest of the world, providing clean, dependable power wherever it is needed.
