Celebrating Black History Month - The Value of Professional Growth

By Whitney Wilber, Global Employer Brand Marketing Communication Specialist

Black History Month is a time for recognizing the central role of African-Americans in U.S. history, for Cummins, it is also about highlighting the significance of diversity and inclusion. In honor of Black History Month, we’ve invited employees to share their personal stories, helping others to understand what this month represents, as well as the importance of an inclusive workplace year round.

Years at Cummins: 10

On the significance of Black History Month…

“Black History Month is a time of reflection on all of the great accomplishments exhibited by outstanding African-Americans through courage, innovation, and determination.  It's a wonderful opportunity for our culture to be acknowledged for the influences we've had on American culture, as well as the world.”

Understanding the value of diversity inside Cummins…

“Being exposed to different cultures at Cummins has made me more open-minded and increased my willingness to share with others.  I have learned a lot from colleagues by having discussions about our differences and similarities, which has helped in removing biases and developing trust with one another.”

Living your values at Cummins…

“I've had the opportunity to participate in many community involvement activities sponsored by Cummins such as the Hank Aaron Celebrity Sports Weekend and the National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Awards in Memphis, Tennessee.  Not only did these activities celebrate the achievements of black leaders, but they also provided opportunities to the future leaders through scholarships to college.   My participation in the affinity groups, specifically African and African-American Affinity Group (AAAAG), provides a medium for me to share with other people of color some of the challenges faced with being a minority at Cummins.”
