Celebrating Women's History Month – Fostering Acceptance in the Workplace
By Whitney Wilber, Global Employer Brand Marketing Communication Specialist
Women’s History Month is a time for recognizing the central role of women in US history, for Cummins, it is also about highlighting the significance of diversity & inclusion. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’ve invited employees to share their personal stories, helping others to understand what this month represents, as well as the importance of an inclusive workplace year round.
Employee Highlight: Basirat Shokunbi, Human Resources Generalist
Time at Cummins: 1 year and 8 months
“Women’s History Month is a time to recognize the positive impact women have made to our society. While Women’s History Month is a time to show our appreciation of women, it is also a time to reflect on the issues women currently face. As a society, we should challenge ourselves to eliminate the inequalities and barriers that women still face today.”
Understanding the value of diversity inside Cummins…
“Having a diverse work environment means I am constantly learning about myself and others which is enriching for my own development. When employees are able to bring their unique backgrounds, perspectives, and experience to the table we are able to operate at our maximum potential.”
Feeling pride working within an inclusive environment…
“Within my first weeks of joining Cummins my manager, Yolanda Casas, invited me to have lunch at her house with her family. Her mother was visiting from Mexico and prepared a delicious authentic Mexican meal for us. I was very humbled and appreciative of the extent Yolanda went to make me feel welcomed at Cummins and at her home. This encompasses my general experience at Cummins. Our differences bring us together rather than apart.”
Living your values at Cummins…
"Cummins’ commitment to corporate responsibility and community involvement allows me to support the programs and issues that resonate with me. As someone who has spent the majority of their professional career in the non-profit sector, I find it fulfilling that I am encouraged to remain active in my community.”
