Celebrating Women's History Month - Maintaining Diversity within the Workplace

By Whitney Wilber, Global Employer Brand Marketing Communication Specialist

Women’s History Month is a time for recognizing the central role of women in US history, for Cummins, it is also about highlighting the significance of diversity & inclusion. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’ve invited employees to share their personal stories, helping others to understand what this month represents, as well as the importance of an inclusive workplace year round.

Employee Highlight: Kristin Johnson, Senior HR Generalist - NA Integration

Years at Cummins: 4

“Women’s History Month is a great way to highlight the accomplishments and contributions of women throughout history and in today’s society. This month brings awareness to the success women have had in areas such as politics, civil rights, public service and much more. The origins of Women’s History Month began as one single day in 1911 and has blossomed into a month long of celebrations and acknowledgements. This is pivotal to me as I continue to see women breaking down gender stereotypes in Corporate America by obtaining leadership roles and closing the gap on pay inequities.”

Understanding the value of diversity inside Cummins…

“Within the Cummins HR function, we pride ourselves on being the ‘keepers’ of Cummins core values. With diversity being one of our six core values, it is essential in my role in HR while running any of our HR processes. The HR function ensures that Cummins has a diverse pool of candidates. Whether it’s our Hire to Develop philosophy or moving internal talent throughout the company, maintaining a diverse pool allows us to select qualified candidates for each role. Furthermore, HR has to be welcoming of different backgrounds and cultures, to successfully provide comprehensive advice to our diverse employees and managers.”

Feeling pride working within an inclusive environment

“Since my role at Cummins supports the Cummins North America Distributors, I have the opportunity to visit our different distributor locations. During these visits I get the chance to learn more about the distributors’ history and the pride they feel working for Cummins. From the smaller branches like Gaylord, Michigan to larger branches in Surrey, BC, Canada, when I walk through the doors, I still feel like we are all ‘One Cummins’. Though the distributors’ atmosphere is very different than the corporate atmosphere I work in, the environment is still inclusive and the employees are always welcoming and happy to share the work they do day in and day out, for our customers.

In addition, participating in Cummins affinity groups and ‘Every Employee, Every Community’ hours has presented a feeling of pride and inclusiveness. My experiences with the Women’s Affinity Group and African and African-American Affinity Group mentoring circles events, have enriched my abilities to network and understand different career paths people are afforded within Cummins. Serving in Seymour, IN to prepare Thanksgiving baskets for Anchor House has helped me personally feel the appreciation our community partners have for Cummins' generosity and commitment to improving our communities. In addition to my work, I believe these experiences provide added gratification. Working for Cummins empowers me to take part in anything I am passionate about.”

Living your values at Cummins…

“When I come to work, I truly feel I am being treated with dignity and respect. I believe my thoughts and ideas are appreciated and taken into consideration when in a larger group setting or a smaller staff meeting. I believe I’m a part of a big team with an even bigger goal. I am also grateful for the flexibility my role provides since I am a mother. This helps me prioritize and balance my work and life obligations.”
