Celebrating Women's History Month - A Commitment to Core Values

By Whitney Wilber, Global Employer Brand Marketing Communication Specialist

Women’s History Month is a time for recognizing the central role of women in US history, for Cummins, it is also about highlighting the significance of diversity & inclusion. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’ve invited employees to share their personal stories, helping others to understand what this month represents, as well as the importance of an inclusive workplace year round.

Employee Highlight: Katelyn Perera, Global Installation Quality - Application Engineer

Years at Cummins: 4

“Women’s History Month is a time for me to reflect on how far we, as women, have come in the world. I am thankful that I live in an era in which gender equality is a normal value. I couldn’t imagine how different my personality would have been if I was born decades ago and did not have the same rights as my male peers. From a young age, I was always told that I can do anything I put my mind to. I can thank our developing history for that!”

Understanding the value of diversity inside Cummins…

“I chose to work at Cummins because of its commitment to its core values and the diverse atmosphere. As a female engineer, I am the minority in my day-to-day work as well as in all of my meetings. Yet, I have never felt mistreated nor discriminated against. I am thankful that Cummins instills equality into its employees; I always feel valued in my role and in the workplace.”

Feeling pride working within an inclusive environment

“This reminds me of a time I was attending a Society of Women Engineers meeting at my alma mater and networking with fellow female engineers over dinner. Many of them verbalized negative situations they’ve experienced in their roles at other companies. As I sat there, I listened to them share at least one similar or multiple examples of times where they’ve felt inferior to their male coworkers. In this moment, I felt very proud that I had nothing but positive comments about my job at Cummins and how diversity is one of our core values that Cummins employees live up to!”

Living your values at Cummins…

“In my daily work and life, I’m able to be the person I wish to be. At Cummins I’m never restricted but always ‘empowered’! I can always be myself at work and there is countless support for everyone coming from all walks of life to do the same.”
