Cummins Machine of the Month - January 2019

Durability, reliability and power are key deliverables for equipment used on jobsites where the ability to meet a deadline is critical. To keep their construction projects on schedule, central-Florida’s (USA) Southland construction relies on their Cummins B4.5 Performance Series powered roller to complete tasks that are critical to high-quality construction projects.

Weighing in at over 23,500 pounds, the roller uses vibration to compact lime rock before asphalt is applied as the road surface. Frequently, the roller must power up grades while continuing to compact the lime rock. This ability to navigate grades while continuing to compact sets it apart from other rollers in the Southland fleet. According to roller operator, Bob Hagood “it’s a strong running motor, it doesn’t bog down going up hills.”

Originally built in 1991, and originally powered by a QSB3.9, the roller was selected in 2017 to participate in field tests for the Cummins B4.5 Performance Series. Since installation in January 2018 the B4.5 has logged over 600 hours in the toughest conditions that central-Florida offers.
