Cummins Water Works expands partnership with The Nature Conservancy and launches newest alliance with WaterAid in continued efforts to improve water security.

Cummins’ global strategic program to address water security is continuing to impact communities around the world. Through two new grants with The Nature Conservancy and WaterAid, the Cummins Water Works program will expand work to improve water quality in the Mississippi River and implement water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH) improvements at several schools and communities in Nigeria.

“The resources provided by Cummins illustrate the steadfast commitment our company is making to strengthen communities through sustainable water,” said Travis Meek, Cummins Corporate Responsibility Director – Environment. “These grants to The Nature Conservancy and WaterAid total almost $2.8 million and are poised to make a substantial impact to many people’s lives.”

Planned activities in Minnesota

Cummins’ efforts to improve the Mississippi River Basin started in 2022 with a large-scale grant to The Nature Conservancy focused on Indiana and the Gulf of Mexico. By expanding resources into Minnesota near the Cummins Fridley Plant, the project will help improve water quality in this area by reducing nutrient and sediment pollution entering the rivers and streams within the basin. The project will enhance wetland areas that filter and store groundwater, restoring wild rice populations and increasing their abundance to support native tribes.

In total, the project will improve about 25,000 acres of farmland through conservation practices by restoring an estimated 200 wetlands and 20 acres of wild rice, enhancing one mile of river habitat, and constructing and distributing 250 soil health kits, which will be provided to agronomists, farm advisors, and influential farmers.

The project also is anticipated to provide volumetric water benefits that exceed the annual water consumption at Cummins facilities in the area. These benefits will help Cummins achieve its PLANET 2050 sustainability goal of producing net water benefits that exceed its annual water use in all Cummins regions by 2030.

Asit Desai, Fridley Plant Manager at Cummins, shared, “Employees from our Fridley facility can volunteer to assemble soil health kits, participate in wild rice seeding in rivers and streams, remove invasive species, participate in native species plantings, and join wetland restoration opportunities. We have over 75 employees already signed up to volunteer for events starting in early October. I’m very excited to mobilize our employees to make positive contributions toward improving and preserving our state’s natural resources.”

Addressing serious needs in Nigeria

Cummins Water Works’ newest partner, WaterAid, envisions a world where everyone, everywhere has safe and sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene. Its mission is to transform lives by improving this access in the world’s poorest communities.

In Nigeria, about 33% of people lack access to basic drinking water, 55% lack access to basic sanitation, and over 80% lack access to basic hygiene services. As a result, diarrheal diseases are the second leading cause of death among children under five, killing about 150,000 children annually. Only 11% of schools, 6% of health facilities, and 4% of markets and motor parks in the country have access to basic WASH services.

Both Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, are suffering financially. These cities have had challenges in accommodating their growing populations, leading to periodic cholera outbreaks. “Cummins has a significant presence in Nigeria,” says Ifeyinwa Alex-Anene, Technical Education in Communities (TEC) Project Manager, Cummins West Africa Ltd. “We have a long history of partnering with not-for-profit organizations to support schools, vulnerable homes, and persons across the different locations where we have presence. By bringing water and sanitation efforts to Lagos and Abuja, we will significantly improve the lives of many people and achieve sustainable impact.”

The partnership between Cummins and WaterAid will contribute to Nigeria’s National Action Plan (NAP) to reverse the national state of emergency related to water, sanitation, and hygiene. This intervention will help state governments make potable water available and accessible, while promoting good hygiene practices in schools and communities. In addition, WaterAid will build capacity to operate and manage the WASH facilities after construction, sustainably addressing operations and maintenance. Collectively in both Lagos and Abuja, these efforts are estimated to affect over 185,000 people, providing water supply for about 11,000, sanitation for 6,500, and hygiene for 168,000.

Through Cummins’ Corporate Responsibility strategy, the company continues to work on a wide variety of community initiatives. Learn more about what’s happening at Cummins by visiting Cummins Newsroom

WHY

According to Indiana’s National Assessment Educational Progress (NAEP), only 33% of 4th graders in Indiana read at or above a proficient level, with Black students among those suffering most. The NAEP results reflect the reality of educational inequities created by centuries of systemic racism that are still present today. How do we begin to engage and excite youth in the area of reading? High quality, culturally relevant books that can serve as mirrors and motivation to a historically left out population is a start. The Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood of Indianapolis has a scarcity of books in places where Black children are present and a lack of stories that positively reflect the youth within the communities.

This partnership is created to provide children and families access to enjoyable books, powerful stories and meaningful community interaction that will cultivate, a joy for reading, a healthy sense of self, fruitful lives and future aspirations. We will display boxes containing 15 curated books for K-3rd graders as designed by The 15 White Coats & Black Worldschoolers Mobile Bookstore.

Employees from the Cummins Community Involvement Team (CIT) along with volunteers within partnering organizations will deliver the threetiered book boxes and read stories aloud to the children at site locations throughout the year. Locations in the Martindale-Brightwood community as identified by the Edna Martin Christian Center, Kipp Indy, and other local partners. The partnership will host a literacy event in collaboration with Kipp Indy Schools in Spring 2023 to bring in the Mobile Bookstore and National Book Award Finalist, Author, Derrick Barnes.

Resilient Readers Book Club is a book gifting initiative for school age children created by the nationally renowned, The 15 White Coats and Black Worldschoolers Mobile Bookstore, providing access to culturally relevant literature to inspire the youth of tomorrow. The Indianapolis area launch will take place March 6th 3 pm-6pm at KIPP Indy Legacy High School, and is powered by Cummins Inc.

We are inviting local and national media outlets to attend this groundbreaking event as well as to print details in order to raise awareness to the importance of having access to culturally relevant literature within our communities.

Cummins’ Statement on South Carolina’s Proposed Abortion Ban

""

Over the past few months, Cummins has been communicating internally to our employees, and publicly, our concerns with laws and proposals that limit the ability of people to make decisions about their reproductive healthcare. We are very concerned with the proposed legislation in South Carolina that would limit reproductive healthcare access.

If passed, this legislation will impact our employees, our communities and impede our ability to attract and retain a diverse workforce in South Carolina. Cummins believes that women should have the right to make reproductive healthcare decisions as a matter of gender equity, ensuring that women have the same opportunity as others to participate fully in the workforce and that our workforce is diverse. South Carolina’s proposed legislation is contrary to this goal.

For Cummins to be successful it is critical that we have a safe and welcoming workplace, and communities where we embrace our differences and enable all employees to thrive. As we continue to grow our footprint with a focus on selecting communities that align with our values and business goals, this law will be considered in our decision-making process.

We want to make it clear that Cummins will continue to provide our employees with access to high-quality, affordable healthcare, regardless of where they live and are able to make healthcare decisions based on what they believe is right for them.
