Marine Corps to Cummins: Paul’s story of leadership
Paul is a new Power Generation Supervisor who recently transitioned from military service to civilian life at Cummins Inc. He joined the company in April ’24 as an intern through the DOD SkillBridge program. The program allows active-duty military to spend the last 3-6 months of service working at a corporate partner gaining valuable industry work experience and skills. Paul quickly advanced from in-shop supervisor to Power Generation Supervisor, where he supervises operations, serves as the safety champion, manages fleet vehicles and oversees training initiatives.
Reflecting on his journey from military to civilian life, Paul believes his success story is still unfolding. He credits his supportive team members and his passion for Cummins for making his military retirement and civilian transition easier. “My admiration for Cummins originated from my experience with the 5.9 Cummins engine,” he recalls. “To me, it embodies the essence of American engineering.”
Paul finds purpose in his role and helps manage approximately 30 technicians. He says the most rewarding aspect of coming to work each day is the opportunity to care for his team. “I enjoy problem-solving and prioritizing my team’s welfare,” he shares. Drawing on his 20 years of military experience, he has learned valuable leadership lessons from both inspiring and challenging leaders. “Leading teams comes naturally to me, and I feel it’s my obligation to pass down this knowledge,” he adds. This sense of purpose was what he sought as he made the transition into civilian life.
One of Paul’s proudest achievements is earning the trust and confidence of his team and peers through collaboration on various projects. “Solving problems with such a supportive group is significant for me,” he explains. Embracing the One Cummins culture, he emphasizes the importance of networking and building connections across the organization. “Even with nuanced differences, we all share the same goals.”
Paul’s military experience plays a crucial role in his success at Cummins. “Leading Marines and maintaining accountability for high-value items aligns closely with the daily expectations here,” he shares. His time spent in challenging environments honed his creativity and problem-solving skills, teaching him the importance of listening and fostering open communication among his team. “My ability to lead such a large group was fostered during my Marine Corps career,” he reflects. He says this position has been incredibly rewarding, and his military background has significantly contributed to his success.
Cummins stands out for its commitment to creating a welcoming atmosphere for veteran employees through initiatives like Hiring Veterans. “I’m surrounded by team members who understand the military expectations,” he states. “Cultivating a great team means prioritizing the mission and the team.”
At Cummins, we take pride in honoring the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees, particularly those who have served. Paul’s journey exemplifies the vital principles of leadership, collaboration and perseverance that are essential in both military and civilian life.
