Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) was awarded a $490.9 million contract to produce diesel powered generators for the United States Department of Defense. Specifically, the Department of Defense will receive Cummins Advanced Medium Mobile Power Sources (AMMPS) generator sets. Under this contract Cummins will deliver generator sets through 2023.
The new AMMPS units will save the Department of Defense $432 million through energy and fuel efficiencies. The new AMMPS units are 21 percent more fuel efficient, 35 percent quieter, and 40 percent more reliable than the previous fleet of Tactical Quiet Generators (TQGs). The increased efficiency and less need for fuel, means reduced costs, but most importantly it significantly increases the safety of troops in combat, because fewer fuel transport runs are required.
“As we approach a century of making people’s lives better by powering a more prosperous world, it is a great privilege to support and serve our men and women, who protect this nation,” said Steve Iverson, Director Government and Military Business at Cummins. “Cummins has a history of providing quality service and dependable power solutions to our military, from Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources (BEAR) generators to AMMPS. It is an honor to provide products that have a direct impact on improving the safety and well-being of US military professionals in the field.”
AMMPS generators also have a carbon emissions reduction of 509,698 metric tons CO2 or, 7.7 million metric tons over the expected life of the generators. Today, there are over 24,000 Cummins AMMPS generator sets being used in Afghanistan, Africa, South Korea and the Continental United States.
Cummins’ nearly 100 years of technological innovation across many different markets, allows the company to be uniquely positioned to help the U.S. military meet its distinct and varying energy challenges. In fact, Cummins has demonstrated future enhancements to reduce fuel consumption through microgrid capability and increased system reliability, actions that are aligned with the Department of Defense’s fuel saving and security initiatives.
