Colnago 45 Pilot: Dedicated to Versatility

by Alan Haig-Brown
Pilot Croatia

It has been said that if you want a versatile, practical, and safe boat, go to an islander. With multiple generations on the Isle of Škoj in the Adriatic off the Croatian city of Split, Luka, the youngest of the Colnago family, is a noted designer and builder. His latest work, the Colnago 45 Pilot, is one of his most versatile yet.

A lot of Luka’s boats are high-end, high-speed, pleasure and touring craft, but islands also need practical working boats. To that end, the Colnago Shipyard, on the mainland near Split, is currently building a pair of multi-purpose boats for marine work.

The shipyard, like the design company, is owned by the Colnago family under Pakleni otoci d.o.o. The Croatia-inspired boats are being built for Trading Neptuno Agencia Naviera. The Ecuadorean-based company provides ships with agency services and husbandry services, including launch services and crew changes for visiting ships. These services are often delivered at small Ecuadorian ports similar to those found in coastal Croatia.

pilot render 1The new boats will be 13.04-meters long with a 4.14-meter beam and a 2.04-meter depth of hull. The main engines are a pair of Cummins QSB6.7, each delivering 480 HP to Twin Disc ZF Series gear boxes and turning conventional propellers. This system will give the boat a comfortable 27-knot cruising speed at half-load in calm waters. With 100 percent of the engine power the boat is expected to exceed 33 knots.

Pilot render 2The primary function of the vessel will be to transfer pilots to and from ships arriving and departing from Ecuadorian ports. The all-weather boat can serve a lot of roles by acting as an agent for ships. The Colnago 45 Pilot will also be fitted out for quick deployment such as medical evacuation, search and rescue, as well as surveillance and patrol in coastal and inshore waters.

pilot render 3With seating for up to six passengers, the boat will normally be operated by a two-person crew. It will carry two 750-liter fuel tanks and a 150-liter potable water tank. Delivery of the pair is scheduled for August 2020.
