Mexico’s SENI Builds on Success

The Aramara, with the skilled build-crew, ready for launch.

Founded in 1980, Servicios Navales e Industrales S.A. de C.V. (SENI) continues to grow in both repair work and new construction at the yard in Mazatlan, Mexico. As more nations look to have vessels trading between their own ports built in national yards, SENI is in a position to meet the demand. In 2008, SENI formed a joint venture with Australia’s Strategic Marine to complete two major projects while upgrading the skill set of their workers.

Under this venture two 52-meter crewboats and two 35-meter buoy handler vessels were built. The crew boats were delivered to their owners, Blue Marine, for charter to Pemex in the Gulf of Mexico. Their construction was said to be the first off shore boats built in a private Mexican yard with private money. The buoy tenders were delivered to the Mexican government. While it would be premature to say that Mexico can meet all domestic shipbuilding, these vessels represent a significant step.

Sleek lines and Cummins power.

The two crew boats, Aramara and Lluavi, were delivered in October 2009 and January 2010 respectively. Built to a proven design by Strategic Marine, each boat is 52 by 10 by 3.6-meters with a 60-passenger capacity and 223 square meters of cargo deck space. Four Cummins KTA50-M2 engines, each delivering 1800 HP at 1900 RPM, provide propulsion power. The engines turn 1270×1171 m/m propellers through Twin Disc MGX6848SC gears with 2.471:1 reduction.

In 2012 SENI continues to operate as an independent builder with an enhanced set of ways and facilities for repair and new construction. (http://www.seni.com.mx)
