Ensuring seamless operation of train traffic signaling systems in France

Standby power for Paris train station signaling system
In collaboration with STAMFORD | AvK, Genmac developed a standby power solution for a train station substation in Archeres, France, operated by the National French Railway Company. This project required a backup generator system to provide uninterrupted power to the station’s traffic signaling system in case of mains failure, ensuring reliable train operations. The total power requirement was set at 400 kVA at 400V, 50Hz.
The standby generator system, featuring the STAMFORD S4 alternator with twin AVR , was carefully designed to withstand environmental conditions, altitude, temperature fluctuations, and specific space limitations at the substation. Installed by AMGE France, the system supports essential operations, maintaining continuous power to the station’s signaling infrastructure.
Tailored solution and key safety features
The project presented unique challenges, including handling low load conditions and providing space to integrate contractors and circuit breakers. To address these, Genmac incorporated an integrated load bank that allows underload testing without causing blackout, ensuring the engine operates at the correct minimum load. Additional safety measures included a manual shut-off valve on the fuel circuit, allowing emergency response teams to act swiftly. A position contact on the valve handle also sends a stop request to the engine, preventing fuel drainage during regular valve testing.
