Renewable diesel and its role in cleaner energy

Shifting to cleaner, sustainable fuel alternatives is more crucial than ever. As global industries strive to combat climate change, the demand for renewable diesel and HVO is rising. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that U.S. renewable diesel production capacity could reach 384,000 bpd, or 5.9 billion gallons annually, by the end of 2025.

Since HVO shares many properties with traditional diesel, it is a drop-in fuel that can be easily substituted or blended with traditional diesel.  As interest in this simple, efficient alternative grows, our team is here to assist you and your business in understanding and leading HVO adoption so you can stay on the road to Destination Zero.

HVO fuel for cleaner engine and generator power

At Cummins, we pride ourselves on our history of innovation and design our products to integrate renewable diesel seamlessly. Since our portfolio of vehicle engines and power generators rarely requires modifications to utilize HVO or R100, we are making the transition to renewable diesel simple and straightforward. Connect with our team of experts to learn more about HVO and how it can help you meet your sustainable goals.

Benefits of switching from diesel to HVO fuel

HVO is renewable diesel produced from recycled vegetable oils. HVO contains 7% less fuel density, limited aromatic and sulfur content, and a higher cetane value than traditional diesel.

Drop-in solution

HVO can be directly substituted for diesel, which means no changes or modifications are needed to run approved Cummins engines and generators on HVO fuels.

Reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%

Although HVO fuel has similar chemical and physical properties to diesel fuel, it can help reduce net greenhouse gas emissions without any necessary modifications.

Improved engine performance

Renewable diesel has a higher cetane number than conventional diesel, offering more efficient combustion and enhancing engine performance.

Easy storing and handling

You can follow the same maintenance, fuel polishing, and storage recommendations for HVO as you would for diesel.

Renewable diesel FAQs

Yes, HVO can be blended with diesel in any proportion. Since blends of diesel and HVO do not significantly affect engine performance, it is easy to integrate HVO fuel into your fuel strategy.  HVO is a key part of our effort to provide customers with the broadest range of lower-carbon fuel alternatives through our Destination Zero strategy.

HVO is a diesel-like fuel produced through a process known as hydrogenation. In hydrogenation, lipids comprised of paraffinic hydrocarbons, such as vegetable oils, tallow, or used cooking oil, are treated with hydrogen. This process occurs at high pressures and temperatures, resulting in a renewable, low-carbon fuel that can blend with conventional diesel.
