When biodegradable materials decompose, they release methane and undergo aerobic digestion, a process in which bacteria break down organic matter. This process produces organic materials like biogas, which can be captured and converted into natural gas. With only a minor clean-up and refinement, biogas can generate heat and electricity.
RNG differs from fossil fuels because it's produced from biodegradable waste. When these biodegradable materials decompose, methane is released. This methane is then captured and converted into RNG. Because methane is the primary component of natural gas, RNG is interchangeable with natural gas derived from fossil fuels.
Methane is the primary component of RNG, which is chemically almost identical to conventional natural gas. However, RNG is carbon-neutral because it originates from fermented organic waste, such as sewage sludge or animal manure. Depending on the energy source, the carbon intensity of RNG can even be sub-zero.
Experts use a carbon negative index to assess the environmental impact of various fuels. A fuel is considered carbon-negative when it reduces the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. The carbon intensity of RNG depends on the type of feedstock used to produce it. This means where the RNG derives from determines its place on the scale and whether or not it's considered carbon negative.
