The highly anticipated, industry-first big bore X15N engine delivers a range of long-haul applications similar to that of diesel. The X15N weighs less than our earlier 15L diesel models and significantly reduces emissions. Powered by natural gas – and in some cases, renewable natural gas (RNG) – the X15N is capable of meeting stringent EPA and CARB regulations. With power ratings up to 500 hp and torque up to 1850 lb-ft, this heavy-duty engine brings the future of transportation to you.

Applications
Uptime:
The X15N is designed for maximum uptime, providing enhanced reliability. Real-time over-the-air calibration and trim update capability, remote monitoring, and other reliability-enabled digital features prevent unplanned downtime. And of course, X15N owners can rely on Cummins service and support network, connecting them to service locations and technicians sooner so trucks can get back on the road.
Lower Total Cost of Ownership:
The X15N is built with cost savings in mind, demonstrating up to a 10% fuel economy improvement compared to the current ISX12N. A passive and maintenance free three-way catalyst aftertreatment system from Cummins Emissions Solutions offers optimal simplicity. Since it's powered by natural gas, the X15N does not require diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).
Refueling and infrastructure:
Natural gas is abundant, relatively affordable, and widely available across North America's infrastructure. Over 300,000 miles of inter- and intrastate natural gas pipelines as well as 2.5 million miles of underground natural gas distribution lines continue to expand as more and more fleets adopt natural gas and further investment is made in the energy sector.
Natural gas can be accessed both publicly and privately in the United States. In compressed form (CNG), there are roughly 1,500 public and private fueling stations across the U.S. Comparatively, there are only 60 liquified natural gas (LNG) stations. Businesses interested in CNG, however, can build fueling stations on their own premises through fast-fill fueling stations, time-fill stations, or a hybrid combination-fill station making refueling easy and affordable.
- Private (“behind the fence”) refueling works well for return-to-base fleets and allows for more consistent contracted fuel prices. A majority of commercial vehicle refueling is done this way for CNG today, using a either fast-fill or overnight time-fill refueling. A major benefit of behind the fence refueling is the stable and low cost of fuel.
- There is increased investment in public refueling stations, which are well-suited to smaller fleets or those less able to expand infrastructure. Public fuel prices are more susceptible to short-term market fluctuations than behind the fence supply, which is based on a contract with a specific fuel supplier.
- Expanding the number of public refueling options along major travel corridors will be an important part of wider scale adoption of natural gas in line-haul applications. Cummins is working with the fueling suppliers and seeking inputs from fleets on the routes to enable a denser fueling infrastructure.
Ease of Operation: The X15N supports Cummins’ strategy to reduce fleet emissions now using available cost-effective technology in a global engine platform that will ultimately include multiple fuel types, including CNG, diesel, and hydrogen. This fuel agnostic strategy will make the X15 a truly global engine platform.
X15 models share common components below the head gasket where possible, reducing hardware, support, and training costs.
Delivering diesel-like ratings and range, the X15N allows fleets to start reducing their transportation emissions today, without sacrificing capability. The engine integrates seamlessly with existing service networks and practices, leading to a high level of parts commonality as new platforms enter the market.
The X15N features a fully optimized powertrain feature suite when paired with a Cummins Eaton Automated Transmission Technologies Endurant HD™ N Transmission and a Cummins Clean Fuel Technologies Fuel Delivery System.
Sustainability:
Although a natural gas engine is an internal combustion engine, and thus, releases some level of greenhouse gas emissions, natural gas vehicles result in a lower overall amount of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and particulate matter (PM) like carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). In fact, the X15N’s CO2 and NOx levels are both 90% below current EPA standards.
RNG has seen a boom in adoption in recent years, with supply increasing by over 200% since 2018. Today, almost 70% of commercial natural gas vehicles in the U.S. are fueled by RNG. When powered by renewable natural gas (RNG), the X15N could have up to a 97% reduction in CO2 and 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. With RNG, the X15N has the potential of reaching sub-zero well to wheel emissions, allowing for an immediate reduction in total transportation footprint starting day one.
