See our Hybrid Electric Retrofit

In May 2025, Cummins and Antofagasta Minerals announced the unveiling of the world’s first Hybrid Electric Retrofit of a Komatsu 930E-4, and The Electric Mine will be your first chance to see a demo HEV unit on Tuesday, May 13.

The innovative hybrid kit is designed to reduce carbon emissions, decrease fuel costs, and enhance operational efficiency while maintaining the operational flexibility that is required in a dynamic mine production environment. The HEV retrofit kit seamlessly integrates with your existing fleet of haul trucks offering an immediate, cost effective decarbonization bridge technology, helping you meet your near-term decarbonization goals without impacting your production targets.

The HEV captures and uses the electrical energy generated from the truck’s rheostatic braking system that is typically emitted as heat through the retard grid. This “free” energy is seamlessly injected back into the truck drive system, offsetting the diesel that would otherwise be consumed in providing the power the operator requested.

Benefits at a glance
  • Reduces fuel use and emissions by up to 30% depending on route
  • Designed to be safe to install, operate, and maintain
  • Requires no new infrastructure
  • No modifications to base truck functionality to ensure continuous operations even when the hybrid system is inactive
  • Potential to reduce cycle time via power boost from hybrid system
  • Life extension of key truck components (e.g., engine, resistor grid) by up to 25%

Start your decarbonization journey

The deployment of a trial HEV is a practical first step towards understanding the applicability and benefits of HEV to your operations now and opportunities for optimization as Cummins continues to evolve the technology, thereby improving the performance to be realized as you convert your fleet.

Decarbonization is a journey that needs to work for your operations and your business while working towards the larger global sustainability mission. This Cummins hybrid solution provides the flexibility and confidence to take a major step forward in an economically sustainable way.

Key features

The hybrid system is comprised of proprietary building blocks that are integrated into a robust system designed to perform in any mining environment.

  • A decarbonization solution that requires no additional mine site infrastructure, maintaining complete fleet operational flexibility. Other haulage decarbonization opportunities require significant investment in infrastructure like trolley lines or static charging stations.
  • Maintain your haul truck productivity even if the HEV system is disabled. Through the ‘fail-to-normal’ design the haul truck can continue to operate with the HEV system isolated until the HEV can be repaired at the next opportune maintenance window.
  • Our retrofittable solution enables the start of your decarbonization journey with the haulage fleet you already own.
  • Designed with the operator in mind, an HEV enabled truck requires no change to how the operator drives the truck.
  • Beyond improved fuel efficiency and performance, the HEV system offers secondary operational and maintenance benefits including decreased load on some truck systems (e.g., diesel engine, retard grid), increased time required between refueling events, and decreased noise during retarding.

Product components

The hybrid system is comprised of proprietary building blocks that are integrated into a robust system designed to perform in any mining environment.

  • Battery pack - Rugged, long-lasting, and safe battery solution that can withstand the harshest conditions.
  • Battery management system - State-of-the-art management system to control the battery charge and discharge cycles while monitoring temperatures and battery health to ensure safe, seamless operation.
  •  DC/DC converter - Proprietary solution that dynamically matches the drive system voltage, enhances battery system safety, reliability, and performance.
  • Control cabinet integration - Custom-built control system links the battery system with the existing traction drive cabinets and motors.
  • Supporting hardware - Equipped with electrical harnesses, thermal management, mounting hardware, and structural reinforcement for the deck.

Bridge technologies

Don’t miss Molly Puga, First Mode General Manager, Cummins, as she shares key updates on hybrid commercialization, retrofitting challenges, and industry partnerships driving mining’s decarbonization on the Surface Mining Stage at The Electric Mine on Wednesday, May 14 at 10am local time.

Following an action-packed year, Cummins demonstrates real progress through strong industry partnerships on the path to Destination Zero. The applicability of bridge solutions across the mining landscape will be reviewed, highlighting challenges and opportunities of retrofitting to decarbonize the large installed base. Following the First Mode acquisition, Cummins will make even more exciting announcements highlighting great progress that’s been made on hybrids and what the future looks like for hybrid commercialization in mining, as well as dual-fuel development including the Cummins-Komatsu-Vale project — some great examples of how industry partnership leads to the right bridge solutions for achieving unique decarbonization goals.
