14X™ HE Tandem Rear Drive Axle Now Available with Dual Meritor Lube Management System (MLMS)
By Cummins Inc., Global Power Technology Leader
EFFICIENCY. EVOLVED. AGAIN.
After more than 100 years of delivering axle innovations, Meritor has introduced the latest enhancement to its 14X HE tandem drive axle to maximize performance and efficiency. Previously only available on the rear carrier, Meritor has upgraded its 14X HE Tandem Rear Drive Axle with Dual Meritor Lube Management System (MLMS), now a standard offering on forward-rear axles.
The addition of MLMS as a standard option on forward axles delivers an axle efficiency gain up to +0.3% through minimizing churning losses and reducing lube levels. The Dual MLMS combined with proven fuel-efficient bearings, high-efficiency spiral bevel gearing and super-fast ratios sets a new standard for the industry.
Meritor has maintained the axle’s performance and functionality with the addition of Dual MLMS without changing the customer interface. Available at all major OEMs, the axle is built upon the trusted and valued 14X platform, offering the most fuel efficient and lightest weight 40k tandem axle available today.
Dual MLMS reduces the lube requirement and churning losses, circulating lube to the housing legs where it cools and then returns back to the bowl. This allows for a reduced lube level by more than five liters in the tandem axle, while still providing the necessary lubrication to key elements in the axle and then draining back to the bowl when the vehicle stops or slows down.
Needle bearings are used in between the input shaft and helical gearing for added durability. The robust input shaft is capable of handling high torque associated with the faster axle ratios. The spiral bevel gear design further increases the axle efficiency. Laser welding the ring gear to the diff case allows for improved gear durability, superior joint integrity and weight savings all while reducing oil churning losses as a result of the smooth diff case exterior design. Fuel efficient pinion bearings are also standard to further enhance the overall axle efficiency.
All of these technological advancements working together enables 14X HE to deliver fuel efficiency gains up to 1.8% and 30 pounds of weight savings over Meritor’s current 14X model. To learn more, see the 14x-he product page.
