Cummins Takeover Day at Howard University: Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators
By Cummins Inc., Global Power Technology Leader

At Cummins Inc., we believe in the power of connecting with young minds, nurturing their potential and providing them with opportunities to succeed. Embodying our company’s commitment to fostering the next generation of talent, on October 18, a team from Cummins hosted Cummins Take Over Day - a day of impactful events at Howard University that reached over 400 students.
While on campus, we offered a series of engaging workshops, each tailored to equip students with essential skills for their professional journey. These workshops focused on key areas such as personal branding, the art of the elevator pitch, and critical considerations in job offers. Led by members of the Cummins team, the workshops were not just informative but also interactive, allowing students to practice and refine these vital skills.
Additionally, the Cummins team transformed the Mackey green and brick areas of the campus, the college of engineering and architecture, into lively spots that included music, fun, and food, providing a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for the students. This blend of entertainment and education created a memorable experience for all who attended.
In collaboration with the School of Business Leadership, leaders from Cummins presented during two business classes, providing students with invaluable insights into leadership and business. Creating this engagement was a vital part of our mission to inspire and educate future leaders in business.

Partnering with Howard University's faculty was another highlight, as we met with professors from the College of Engineering and Architecture to establish a Capstone Project. This initiative was designed to challenge students to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical, real-world problems, bridging the gap between academia and industry.
While on campus, Cummins’ innovation was also showcased through interactive activities. This event featured Cummins vehicle demonstrations, a 3D simulator demonstration, and a workshop on leading green initiatives, each designed to engage students in a dialogue about the future of technology and sustainability.
One of the most impactful aspects of the day was the Cummins team conducting interviews with more than 20 students right on the spot, concluding with 11 job offers extended to the students. Our team also awarded $14,500 in student scholarships throughout the day, and students also received gift cards, a gesture to recognize and reward their hard work and achievements.
The Cummins Takeover Day was more than an event; it was a collaborative effort to empower students and integrate academic excellence with industry leadership. We are proud to have hosted such an experience that not only offered immediate opportunities but also laid the groundwork for long-term partnerships and career success for the students at Howard University.
