Cummins 2027 X15 diesel on display at TMC
The advanced diesel engine, Cummins’ most efficient yet, is designed for the first time with Cummins’ fully integrated powertrain featuring Eaton-Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies and Cummins Drivetrain and Braking Systems
By Cummins Inc., Global Power Technology Leader

Today, Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) announced its most efficient heavy-duty diesel engine ever is on display at American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition (TMC), March 10-13 in Booth 947 at Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee (U.S.). The X15 diesel engine serves the heavy-duty on-highway market in North America.
“There is a lot of uncertainty today, and we know our customers need reliability above all else so they can effectively run their businesses. With more than 25 years of experience, we designed our 2027 X15 with better fuel efficiency while maintaining the horsepower and torque ratings our customers have come to rely on. The X15 gives them the stability they need today and well into the future,” said Jose Samperio, Vice President – North American On-Highway Engine Business.
The 2027 X15 maintains the traditional reliability and lower operating costs that have met the needs of a diverse customer base since the inaugural X15 launch in 1998. The advanced diesel engine will feature improved greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency benefits with ratings up to 605 horsepower and 2,050 ft-lb of torque and optimize powertrain integration with Eaton Cummins and Cummins Drivetrain and Braking Systems.
Cummins is committed to innovation and providing quality solutions to customers, like internal combustion engines and alternative technologies. This engine is designed to have the capability to meet future emissions regulations beyond 2027 without sacrificing performance. This investment will help the company maintain technology leadership for the next decade as it funds future research and development in hydrogen and alternative fuel engines, battery electric, hybrid, and fuel cell powertrains.
From its inception, the X15 was developed with Cummins’ fully integrated powertrain in mind. Customers taking advantage of EX ratings (requires Eaton Cummins Endurant and GPS look-ahead data) with Cummins Meritor axles and drivelines will experience additional optimized fuel efficiency and drivability through features such as predictive gear shifting, on-ramp boost, and hill roll-out. The engine will be available for pre-order in mid-2025, with delivery in 2026.
Get to know the 2027 X15
- Optimized components and systems contribute up to 4% improvement in fuel efficiency on the base engine (over the 2024 EPA X15) while maintaining similar diesel exhaust fluid consumption.
- Cummins sculpted the 2027 X15 engine block to offer a weight-neutral engine system (engine + aftertreatment) with better fuel efficiency—allowing for more payload.
- Cartridge-style filters not only reduce costs but also minimize environmental impact and improve ease of maintenance.
- Customers can utilize Cummins Maintenance Monitor with the engine to reduce visits to the shop and minimize the cost of operation due to longer maintenance intervals and more accurate maintenance.
- Remote diagnostics provide early detection and visibility to fault alerts based on severity and priority, including service recommendations, speeding up the resolution of issues.
- Cummins empowers its customers to go the distance with an industry-leading service and support network. This extensive network boasts over 3,700 authorized service locations, ensuring that reliable and efficient service is readily available wherever the journey may take them.
Eaton-Cummins Endurant
The Endurant HD and XD series are optimized for the 2027 X15 powertrain to work seamlessly, improving efficiency and performance while maintaining drive comfort. All with a best-in-class transmission lube change interval of 750,000 miles as well as remote diagnostic capabilities.
Cummins Drivetrain and Braking Systems
The Meritor 14X™ HE tandem drive axle features the proprietary Meritor lube management system (MLMS) as a standard option on forward axles, delivering an incremental 0.3% axle efficiency gain by minimizing churning losses and reducing lube levels. The Dual MLMS – combined with proven fuel-efficient bearings, high-efficiency spiral bevel gearing, and super-fast ratios – sets a new standard for performance and efficiency.
About Cummins HELM™
Cummins HELM is the industry’s first series of engine platforms – the X15, the X10, and the B – that allows customers to choose the fuel type that best suits their needs. These platforms have been designed not as a compromise but with the entitlement of what each fuel can deliver.
Low carbon diesel fuels
Aligned with Cummins diesel engine portfolio, the 2027 X15 is capable of using biodiesel blends up to 20% and renewable diesel blends up to 100%. Cummins was an early adopter of renewable fuels and continues to advance the use of higher biodiesel blends and renewable diesel. These low carbon diesel fuels have been proven to reduce carbon intensity of diesel fuel consumption and are readily available in today’s fueling infrastructure.
