Creating space for growth: How Keivin L. is helping shape the future of Cummins
By Cummins Inc., Global Power Technology Leader
For Keivin L., the path to Cummins has been anything but conventional—but it's a journey grounded in purpose, resilience and a deep passion for people and community.
Before joining the company, Keivin built a dynamic professional foundation. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Wayne State University, followed by a Master of Science in Human Resources and Organizational Development from Eastern Michigan University. His early career began in banking, where he spent eight years in roles ranging from Bank Manager to Mortgage Loan Officer.
Though successful, Keivin felt a calling to pivot into Human Resources—a field that allowed him to combine his analytical skills with his passion for helping others grow. He eventually became a Corporate Recruiter at Meritor, which would later become part of Cummins through acquisition. There, he supported hiring across North American manufacturing sites and corporate functions including Marketing, Finance, Sales and Engineering.
Today, Keivin serves as the Diversity and Talent Attraction Leader for U.S. and Canada Exempt Experienced Hiring. In this role, he’s focused on developing sourcing strategies that attracts top-tier talent. He recently expanded his scope to include recruiting operations for Cummins Drivetrain and Braking Systems (CDBS) —a full-circle moment that allows him to reconnect with many of his former colleagues and broaden his impact across the enterprise.
Technology and collaboration play a major role in his day-to-day success. He uses various tools to help streamline sourcing and engagement, allowing his team to move quickly while staying intentional. Because Keivin’s role includes both strategy development and operations leadership, he’s often thinking several steps ahead—recommending process improvements and identifying new ways to reach talent. “I’m always asking how we can do this better, more inclusively, more efficiently,” he says. “I love the creativity this role allows.”
While Keivin works remotely, strong connections are still central to his experience. Weekly check-ins with his leader and direct report allow for collaboration, coaching and camaraderie. His team relies on ongoing communication, creating a flexible yet engaged work environment. “The focus is on getting the work done,” Keivin adds. “That flexibility allows me to be my best—whether that’s early morning, later in the evening, or somewhere in between.”
That same flexibility fuels his energy outside of work. A lifelong athlete, Keivin’s current obsession is pickleball—at one point juggling three leagues at once. He also plays kickball, volleyball and dodgeball, thriving on the community and competition they offer. In addition to sports, he teaches Zumba, a passion that resets his mindset and keeps him grounded. “Zumba brings me joy—it’s like a moving meditation,” he says.
But Keivin’s energy isn’t just about movement—it’s about meaning. He’s deeply involved in LGBTQ+ advocacy in Detroit, serving as the Policy and Advocacy Director for Stonewall Sports Detroit, a nonprofit that promotes inclusion through recreational sports. At Cummins, he leads the Michigan Pride Employee Resource Group (ERG), fostering connection and support for LGBTQ+ employees and allies across the region. He’s also part of the Detroit CARE team, which supports racial equity initiatives in the community.
That alignment between his personal purpose and the company’s culture is part of what makes Cummins such a meaningful place to work. “Cummins has created a space where I can be myself and do work that matters,” Keivin says. “That’s powerful.”
He points to programs like the Safe Leader Training as key to building more inclusive teams across the organization. “It offers practical tools and guidance to help people become better allies,” he says. “It’s a great step toward building understanding and trust."
His vision for the future is clear. Keivin hopes to continue building on his experience in Talent Acquisition to one day serve as an executive leader in the field. “I genuinely love everything about Talent Acquisition,” he says. “From strategy to sourcing to impact—this is the work I’m meant to do.”
But impact for Keivin isn’t limited to the office. He’s especially proud of the visibility he’s helped build through his community involvement and ERG leadership. “When I show up as a leader in the LGBTQ+ space—both in and outside of Cummins—it sends a message that representation matters. That you can thrive while being your full self.”
Keivin’s journey at Cummins is powered by authenticity, purpose and a deep belief in the inclusive workplaces. Whether he's mentoring a colleague, leading the Pride ERG or helping shape hiring strategies that reflect the of the world around us, his contributions are making a real impact.
“This is a company where you can grow, be seen and be valued,” he says. “You don’t have to compromise who you are to succeed here. That’s rare—and that’s why I’m proud to be part of this team.”
