Diagnostics, Drive and Dedication: Alexis C. Story of Purpose

From a young age, Alexis C. was drawn to the world of mechanics. “Growing up, I used to help out my dad in his trucking company. That is where my passion for fixing issues stems from.” This early exposure not only sparked a love for problem-solving but also instilled leadership skills. “He would even joke around calling me ‘boss man.’”

Alexis’ path to Cummins wasn’t linear. Initially pursuing construction management, the pandemic prompted a career pivot. “I reflected on my career path and chose to attend Universal Technical Institute to complete my Diesel Technology certification.” That decision led him to Cummins where he’s now an in-shop technician at the Chicago (Hodgkins) branch.

What makes his role special? “I truly enjoy seeing the end product of my work… Knowing that I am able to give the customer a reliable and successful product of my hard work makes me feel good about what I do.” Alexis thrives on the challenge of diagnostics and repairs, finding meaning in every task. “Putting all of my knowledge towards completing the task at hand gives me reassurance that I am learning something new every day.”

Teamwork is a cornerstone of Alexis’ experience. “My team is composed of older and younger technicians which creates a good mix of knowledge and wisdom… There is no one in the shop I cannot go to because we are all eager to give out advice so we do not fail.” This collaborative spirit supported by inclusive leadership makes Cummins feel like home. “I, being Mexican, feel comfortable knowing there are others like me at the job… All of this begins with our managers who have created an inclusive work culture.”

Outside of work, Alexis finds balance through family, sports and hobbies. “I love spending quality time with my family… I am a die-hard lifelong Chicago Bears fan.” These passions fuel his energy and purpose throughout the week.

Looking ahead, Alexis is focused on growth. “I hope to be a top tech in the company and want to be the go-to person for any situation.” Cummins supports that ambition. “They have given me the resources to be able to fulfill my goals in my life… Not a lot of workplaces pay for their technicians to grow in their career and knowledge.”

His advice to others considering a career at Cummins? “Go for it! You will not regret it… If you are looking for a career that pushes towards excellence, you want to grow and are willing to give your 100% effort to anything you do, you will accomplish a lot in your career.”
