Tools, Training and Teamwork: Tommy R.’s Cummins Story
By Cummins Inc., Global Power Technology Leader
Tommy R., a Technician Apprentice Program (TAP) student at Cummins, is turning a lifelong passion for mechanics into a promising career. Since joining the company in 2022, he has brought a strong work ethic and a collaborative spirit to every project he’s part of.
Before coming to Cummins, Tommy built his mechanical skills through roles in appliance installation and automotive repair. His enthusiasm for working with his hands – especially on cars – naturally led him to the Cummins TAP program, where he’s found both challenge and opportunity.
Today, Tommy contributes to a long-running initiative focused on upgrading older buses with advanced Cummins technology. His responsibilities include rewiring harnesses, replacing engines and cooling systems – work that is both technically demanding and deeply rewarding. “Being part of a team that completely modernizes vehicles is something I’m proud of,” he says. “It’s meaningful work because we’re extending the life of these vehicles and modernizing them with current technology.”
When Tommy joined the project, it had already been underway for five years. Thanks to strong teamwork and shared expertise, his team became the first to fully complete a bus without any issues. “We’re now working on the final unit,” he said, noting that their collaboration has been a major factor in the project’s success.
Outside of work, Tommy finds balance and motivation through time spent with his two kids. “Being with them helps me recharge and keeps me motivated to stay focused and productive during the week,” he says. Cummins’ support for education and flexible scheduling has helped him juggle family, school and work, empowering him to grow both personally and professionally.
Tommy also appreciates the inclusive culture at Cummins. “Cummins does a great job hiring people from many different backgrounds. It creates a workplace where different perspectives and experiences are valued, and that makes for a better team,” he says. He’s also grateful for the collaborative environment. “If I’m struggling to diagnose a vehicle, I can go to any of my coworkers for support. That collaboration shows the strong team environment we’ve built here in Hodgkins.”
Looking ahead, Tommy is excited about the future of electric vehicles and dreams of working on locomotives. His journey is a testament to the power of skilled trades and the opportunities Cummins provides to fuel potential. “Cummins has given me the tools, training and support I need to succeed. From hands-on experience to paid time for education, I’ve felt set up for success from the start.”
