Enhancing ride comfort with independent front suspension
By Cummins Inc., Global Power Technology Leader
As cities modernize their public transit fleets, the demand for vehicles offering better efficiency, comfort, and long-term reliability continues to grow. This is why Cummins is introducing the first Meritor® independent front suspension purpose-built for the bus and coach markets across Europe and Asia.
Drawing on decades of proven expertise in suspension technology in defense and commercial applications, this new solution brings best-in-class steering, ride quality, and reduced maintenance requirements to a highly competitive segment.
What is an independent front suspension?
An independent front suspension (IFS) is a suspension system that replaces the traditional solid beam axle typically used on the front of buses. Instead of both wheels being connected by a single rigid tube, each wheel is mounted to a separate “corner module,” allowing them to move independently over the road surface.
What are the benefits of a front-drive suspension?
Unlike traditional axles connecting wheels through a shared beam, an independent front suspension allows each wheel to move on its own absorbing bumps and road irregularities more effectively, resulting in a smoother, more stable ride. This is particularly important for passengers on transit and coach routes, where comfort affects satisfaction and perceived service quality.
IFS technology improves ride comfort, reduces body roll, and enhances steering response—key features for buses operating on urban roads or long-distance routes. While commonly used in the passenger car and defense markets, applying this technology to public transport vehicles represents a significant improvement in the overall passenger experience.
What sets the Meritor IFS solution apart?
Reduced maintenance requirements
The new Meritor IFS is designed with a grease-free kingpin and greased-for-life steering. There are no grease points and no need for a central lubrication system, helping reduce service time and cost. Operators can save additional expense by eliminating greasing pumps and the labor associated with frequent lubrication.
Class-leading steering angle
One of the standout features of the Meritor IFS is its best-in-class steering angle of 60 degrees, providing better maneuverability in tight urban settings, narrow streets, and depot environments.
Increased load capacity
The IFS supports a load rating of 8.5 tons, roughly 300 kilograms more than comparable solutions. This additional capacity gives operators greater flexibility in vehicle design and passenger or equipment load planning.
Powertrain integration
The suspension is designed with interchangeable interfaces, making it suitable for retrofit projects as well as new vehicle builds. The system can be packaged with a matching rear axle, whether a traditional MC 17X, the new Meritor 17X + Suspension, or the eULFA, electric low-floor axle, developed by Accelera by Cummins for transit buses.
Technology experience drives new innovation
While this is the first Meritor IFS purpose-built for the global bus and coach market, the technology has been field-tested for decades in defense platforms, where durability, maneuverability, and performance in harsh conditions are critical.
The team leveraged lessons from these demanding applications and combined them with proven truck industry technologies to create a solution tailored for transit and coach vehicles.
A leading European bus customer is the first to first our suspension system, providing a direct reference compared with current solutions. Test results are expected later this year.
Independent front suspension on display at Busworld 2025
The Meritor IFS will be on display, alongside the Accelera eULFA axle, and more Cummins solutions, at Busworld from October 4-9, in Hall 8 booth 810. It’s one of the key components Cummins is introducing to support a full powertrain solution for global bus and coach markets. Don’t miss your chance to check it out in person!
