Driving dependability and performance: Cummins HELM™ platforms for heavy duty vehicles

By Cummins Inc., Global Power Technology Leader

From freight to transit, operators of heavy-duty vehicles are navigating a rapidly shifting landscape. They're expected to cut emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and maintain rock-solid drivability, all while keeping up with increasing demand.

Cummins introduced HELM platforms to equip operators with flexible, future-ready engines that deliver strong performance today while preparing for tomorrow.

Cummins HELM™ Platforms

HELM stands for Higher Efficiency, Lower Emissions, and Multiple Fuels. Engines built on the HELM platform offer fuel flexibility, durability, and adaptability to meet the evolving needs of modern fleets.

Whether you operate heavy-duty or medium-duty trucks, HELM platforms are designed for your specific application—now and in the future. The advantages translate into meaningful long-term cost savings. For end-users, this means more interchangeable components, standardized maintenance procedures, and simplified technician training.

Cummins HELM™ Heavy Duty Platforms

Commercial trucks require engines that are robust, durable, and easy to maintain. HELM platforms’ engine family features three heavy-duty engines that deliver on all fronts: the industry-first 15-liter natural gas engine, X15N, the reimagined 2027 X15 diesel, and the all-new X10.

2027 X15

As the next evolution of Cummins flagship engine, the 2027 X15 builds decades of trust in Class 8 trucks. Redesigned to meet future emission regulations, this HELM-powered engine brings together proven durability and improved emissions technology.

Dependability

Built for maximum uptime, the 2027 X15 is backed by millions of miles of real-world testing; it features an improved Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, an upgraded fuel system, and enhanced thermal efficiency. A more serviceable aftertreatment system simplifies maintenance and reduces downtime.

Performance

With ratings up to 605 horsepower and 2,050 lb-ft of torque, the X15 delivers uncompromising power. Improvements in combustion efficiency and friction reduction boost fuel efficiency over previous generations, making it a smart choice for long-haul applications.

X15N

X15N was built specifically as a natural gas engine, becoming the first to launch on the Cummins HELM platforms. The 15-liter meets capability expectations associated with diesel operations in a cleaner alternative-fuel package. Built on a proven heavy-duty platform, the X15N enables fleets to reduce costs and emissions while maintaining performance and uptime in Class 8 applications using compressed natural gas (CNG) or renewable natural gas (RNG).

Dependability

The X15N features durability enhancements such as an optimized cylinder head, upgraded turbocharger materials, and strengthened internal components. Combined with Cummins digital tools, including remote monitoring and predictive diagnostics, these improvements support longer service life and reduced unplanned downtime.

Performance

With ratings from 400 to 500 hp and torque up to 1,850 lb-ft, the X15N delivers strong low-end pulling power and consistent performance for heavy-duty and long-haul operations.

X10

Positioned between the L9 and X15, the all-new X10 is built for versatility. It’s ideal for both on-highway and vocational applications, including regional-haul, bus, refuse, and construction.

Dependability

Built to perform well above its weight, the X10 features a simplified design that reduces weight and total cost of ownership. Its HELM-based architecture ensures high serviceability and delivers the dependability operators expect from Cummins.

Performance

With up to 450 hp and 1,1650 lb-ft of torque, the X10 punches above its weight. It offers best-in-class power density and is optimized for fuel efficiency and smooth transitions in mixed-duty cycles.

Ready for the Road Ahead

Cummins HELM™ is more than an engine family; it’s a flexible foundation for the future of heavy-duty transportation.
