G-Drive Engines Provide Prime Power to Dockside Cranes in China’s Fujian Province

ShenZhen Superwatt Power Co. Ltd is one of China’s largest generator set manufacturers. Its customer, Noell Crane Systems (China) Ltd, needed diesel engines to provide prime power for its dockside cranes. ShenZhen Superwatt looked to Cummins G-Drive engines to provide the solution.

ShenZhen Superwatt employs 700 people at its parent company in Shenzhen, a major city in Guangdong Province, which lies immediately north of Hong Kong. The ar ea was one of the first to be designated as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), and it has grown rapidly to become one of the most successful of these. Shenzhen is southern mainland China’s major financial centre, home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange and the headquarters of numerous high-tech companies. Shenzhen is also the third-busiest container port in China, after Shanghai and Hong Kong.

ShenZhen Superwatt is an established customer for Cummins G-Drive engines, with a track record of buying QSX15 and KTA19 models in particular. To supply its customer Noell Crane Systems, ShenZhen Superwatt ordered 24 engines in the 5 kW - 2600 kW range. These were 18 QSX15, five KTA50-G3 and three QSK60-G3. ShenZhen Superwatt also ordered four KTA50-G3 engines for stock.

Noell Crane Systems (China) Ltd is based in the 40km2 Zhangzhou Development Zone in Fujian province. This part of China is mountainous and historically agricultural, but like all of coastal China it has seen a great deal of industrial development.

The focus in Zhangzhou is on food processing, machinery and metals manufacturing – and also the development of ports, with direct access to the island of Taiwan.

The Cummins G-Drive engines are used to power generator sets for Noell Crane Systems’ Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes as used on docksides. Noell Crane Systems (China) will be supplying the cranes to its customers on a rental basis.

The company was formed in 1995 as a joint venture between Noell Cranes’ parent company in Germany and China Merchants Group, which is headquartered in Hong Kong and is one of the four largest state-owned enterprises. The joint venture started production in 1998. Today it has 133,000 m2 of workshops and facilities with over 1,200 employees, including professional management staff, experienced technical engineers, supervisors and skilled workers.

ShenZhen Superwatt chose Cummins G-Drive products for this application because of their quality and high technical specification. The generator sets are designed and built to cope with extreme environments including high/low ambient temperatures, requiring specialized parts and attention to painting.
