Powering Erdemir Maden’s essential mining operations

Erdemir Maden, responsible for 34% of Turkey’s iron ore production, is a key supplier to OYAK Mining Metallurgy. Facing critical power needs for its Ermaden Coal Mine in Zonguldak, Erdemir Maden required a Diesel Electrogen Group and Synchronisation System to support essential operations in challenging conditions. The system needed to power two main water pumps (345kW at 3.3kV) and a 315kW air compressor, essential for rapid water discharge in the event of sudden flooding within the mine galleries. Designed for the Ermaden site’s high-altitude, high-humidity environment, Arken Generator's power solution met the requirements of operating at 35°C, 1000 meters altitude, and 90% humidity.

Tailored solution and key benefits

Arken specified two STAMFORD S7 alternators paired with a 1750kVA prime mover and a step-up transformer to achieve the necessary 15.8kV voltage. Key performance features, including STAMFORD’s CoreCooling™ technology, allow for high efficiency and enhanced thermal performance. This setup ensures reliability, increased power density, and reduced maintenance. The Ermaden Coal Mine’s unique environmental and access challenges required a customized approach, including a special coupling design tailored to meet Erdemir’s needs.
