Delivering Reliable Power for One of the World’s Largest Nickel and Cobalt Mines
The Ambatovy Project, the largest capital investment in Madagascar’s history, is a $15 billion mining and processing development set to transform the country’s economy. With an estimated lifespan of 27 years, the project has an annual production capacity of 60,000 tons of nickel, 5,600 tons of cobalt, and 190,000 tons of ammonium sulfate, positioning it as one of the world’s largest lateritic nickel mines.
Located in a challenging and remote environment, the project required a robust and reliable power solution to support continuous operations. STAMFORD P7 alternators were selected as part of a tailored generator set solution, meeting the demanding requirements of this ambitious venture.
Project overview: Prime power for a landmark mining development
To meet the Ambatovy Project’s energy needs, 30 generator sets equipped with STAMFORD P7 alternators were installed, delivering a combined 37.5 MVA of continuous power. These gensets, featuring Cummins KTA50-G3 engines, operate 24/7 from two plants, each supplying 18.75 MVA of power. The system includes:
- 15 x C1250 D2R Units: Equipped for prime power generation.
- Step-Up Transformers: 15 units (0.4 kV/11 kV) to optimize energy delivery
- Advanced Control Systems: Containerized MV cells with Digital Management Control (DMC300s) and MV switchgear for efficient operation.
The STAMFORD P7 alternators, known for their versatility and durability, were crucial to ensuring reliable power in the mine’s harsh operating conditions. Available in ratings from 910 to 2,750 kVA, the P7 alternators feature Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG) technology for enhanced efficiency and 2/3 pitch windings to minimize excessive neutral currents.
Reliability and long-term value
Although initially designed for rental specifications, the robust build and reliable performance of the gensets led the customer to purchase them outright. This decision was influenced by the durability of the STAMFORD P7 alternators and the exceptional support provided throughout the project.
The gensets’ reliability, coupled with STAMFORD | AvK’s technical expertise and commitment to timely delivery, ensured the Ambatovy Project’s power needs were met without delays. The system’s design also accounted for environmental sustainability, aligning with World Bank conservation guidelines.
Empowering economic growth and sustainability
Beyond its operational impact, the Ambatovy Project is a significant contributor to Madagascar’s local economy. During the construction phase alone, the project employed approximately 12,000 workers and supported small and medium-sized local businesses through technical training programs. Extensive community engagement, including over 200 public hearings, ensured the project addressed social and environmental concerns responsibly.
